Coach Jackson looked over at Coach Q who returned the look as they both smiled and nodded their heads. Practice finished on a positive note with the players focused and attentive.
Chapter 13
Coffee #3 â
Pound the Stone Consistently
The next morning Coach Q was eagerly anticipating another meeting with Chris. As Chris had beat him to the coffee shop their first two meetings, Coach Q made a conscious effort to arrive ten minutes early this morning. When Coach Q arrived at the coffee shop early, he was excitedly anticipating that he would be the first one to arrive. He opened the door and looked over to what he had thought would be their empty table. However, Chris was already sitting at the table reading. Their eyes met as Coach Q pointed to the counter, signaling if Chris would like anything. Chris grabbed his chai tea and smiled at Coach Q. Coach Q smiled back as he approached the counter. He ordered his coffee and walked over to the table.
When Coach Q approached the table with his coffee Chris stood up and they shook hands. They both sat down as Coach Q asked, âWhat are you reading?â
While picking up the book to show Coach Q, Chris said âPound The Stone by Joshua Medcalf.â
âAnother book to add to my list,â Coach Q said with a big smile on his face.
âItâs excellent. Itâs my second time reading it. The whole concept of a stone cutter consistently pounding that stone is not only a metaphor for succeeding in basketball, but also in life,â Chris said.
As Coach Q eagerly nods in agreement, Chris continued and asked âI would like to read you a quick section if thatâs ok?
âOf course,â Coach Q answered as he opened up his notebook.
Chris picked up the book and turned to page thirteen. âWhen you face the choice between doing the hard thing or taking the easy way out⦠will you pound the stone? When you face the choice to tackle a challenge or run from it⦠will you pound the stone? When you face the choice to treat a person poorly or well in a tough situation⦠will you pound the stone? When you face the choice to keep showing up or to quit⦠will you pound the stone?â Chris finished. He closed the book and looked at Coach Q, who was jotting something down in his journal. Chris took a sip of his chai tea as he gave Coach Q time to finish writing.
